My first choice has always been Hagan and Bruner's Microbiology and
Infectious Diseases of Domestic Animals by John Timoney - well
written and covers bacterial, viral and other etiologies. An
excellent read. Don't look for a lot of references to ferrets in it,
though

Other then journals in my specialty area of pathology, I commonly
read the Journal fo the AVMA (most vets get it as part of their
membership), and quite a few also read the Compendium on Continuing
Education for the Practitioner.
