Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Serax for Appetite Stimulation

Serax 10mg to try to stimulate his
appetite. He said to open the capsule, give him
1/20-1/10 of the powder (a little mixed in a
little soup) and see if that would stimulate his....

From what I can find- Serax is Oxazepam a benzodiazepam in the class with
Valium and Xanax. I can't think of how this will work for an appetitite
stimulant- I can see how it might work in an animal with separation
anxiety as part of the problem with not eating. In humans I have seen
Megace work ( initial a drug used in certain cancers), and marinol
(derivative of marijuana)= but wouldn't try this on your ferret.

As far as Serax= there is a precaution in renal disease, probably have to
adjust the dose somewhat to account for the way it is metabolized in the
face of renal failure, some drugs need to be decreased, or increased,
some just given at longer intervals, depends on the drug. I don't think
it will hurt him, just not sure it will help. I hope it does, even if it
doesn't he may be feeling good :)
