Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Serax for appetite stimulation

"
It's called CYPROHEPTADINE
and is also a drug used for cats but can
be used short term in ferrets....it comes
in 4 mg tablets which you cut into quarters and give 1/4 in the am and
1/4 in the pm......:"

Periactin is the brand name- an antihistamine. I have seen it used in
kids years ago for the same reason. I didn't mean to say that serax
wasn't good or bad choice, just couldn't think of how it would work to
stimulate the appetite, a lot of drugs have off label uses because of
anedotal evidence of it haven't some unusual side effect- like being used
for an antihistamine in an allergic reaction and noted a large percentage
of people being hungry-- something like that. Also, like Sukie said, all
drugs may have good or bad effects being that each animal may react a
little bit different-so the decisions for treatment is never without some
risks.
