Subject: Re Ferrets with Allergies

One of mine is cursed with allergies, as well as being deaf, and I
give him .05cc of children's liquid Benedryl up to 3 times a day if
he's really having a tough time. He gets really irritable and his
body language is really different (kind of a mean walk) before an
allergy attack, so if I dose him real quick, he doesn't go into a full
blown allergy attack with the red, puffy eyes and lethargy that can
last for a couple days.

I've also found that supplementing his food intake with soup helps
because he doesn't eat as much when he is fighting the allergies.
Licking soup off my fingers is so much easier than crunching the
kibble.

We do know that he is extremely allergic to the laundry detergent
Tide, so anyone who is a frequent visiter in our house and uses Tide
has had to change detergents (the power of a ferret). He often has an
attack after someone new comes in the house, so it's a question I
frequently ask people (no, I'm not doing a detergent survey, I'm just
a crazy ferret person -- it is amazing, though, how many people use
Tide).

Hope this helps.
