Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: More on Revolutiom

I was surprised to read some bad responses on Revolution.
The only negative I see is the cost of the product, but Pfizer has
recently lowered the price to be more competitive with the other
heartworm/ flea products. For those of you who are not familar with
Revolution it is a once a month topical liquid for heartworm
prevention,
and to kill fleas, ticks, ear mites, and sarcoptic mites. It is
selamectin
which is similar to ivermectin. We use a lot of Revolution for kitty
ear
mites.
We clean the ears out and apply the first tube. When we see these
kittens
later for vaccine boosters and/or to spay/neuter them the mites are
gone.
The 0-5 kitten size (15mg) and the 5-15 cat size (45mg) actually
cost the
same. The company recommends the 5-15lb size for ferrets. I talked
to
Dr Dillion (the heartworm guru from Auburn) this past Tuesday about
heartworm prevention in ferrets. He said that all 3 heartworm
products
Heartgard for cats (ivermectin), Interceptor 0-10lb dog
(milbemycin),
and Revolution (selamectin) should be 100% effective, but he was
surprised
about using the 5-15 lb cat size on ferrets. Hopefully with time we
will
know if the 0-5 lb or the 5-15 lb size is best for ferrets. In April
there
is a Heartworm Meeting and maybe one of those experts has tested
Revolution in ferrets. Needless to say now that spring is here
(atleast
here in Texas) it is time to start thinking about heartworm and flea

products if you take your ferret outside.
