Subject: Protruding rectum?

Hi friends -

I have a 4-year old male named Henry. He's in good health overall. In the
past few months, though, I have noticed several times where for a few hours
his rectum is protruding and appears irritated (bright red, possibly lightly
bloody). During this time he butt-scoots pretty frequently, licks the area
a lot, and goes into the litter box frequently (usually with at most a small
dot-like stool) resulting. This appears to last 1-3 hours, after which the
swelling appears to go down and behavior returns to normal. When the rectum
is irritated his energy is still good, and he will play, but then will stop
and lick the area frequently.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance for the time.
