Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] foam around mouth & hind legs weak
Hello Micaela,
AS a layman, it sounds to me like your Bonesy needs to see a vet right away
and be checked for insulinoma among perhaps other things.
The lethargy, foaming at mouth, staring off into space, whining, inability
to walk without falling or staggering, etc. are all what we assess here at
the shelter as symptoms of most likely insulinoma. A disorder which causes
too much insulin in the blood system. The best quick check for his disease
is to take honey or karo syrup on a q tip and rub it across your ferrets
gums. If in about 15 minutes the ferret seems to appear better-- this
highly suggests a low blood sugar disorder. If this is the case-- I
strongly suggest you make an appointment ASAP- tomorrow for a fasting blood
glucose test and an exam by a ferret knowledgeable vet. Insulinoma is
treatable and you may be able to provide some quality time for your ferret.
Sending best wishes and healing thoughts=--
