loss and the genital licking were probably connected to the kidney
stones that killed him, and that both the fur loss and the licking
(attempts at cleaning?) were perhaps due to urine burn. Any
 thoughts, Doctors?

It certainly could have been. When I see an animal licking that area
excessively, my first thought is going to be a urinary tract infection and/or
urine scald. Was his urine ever checked?
