Subject: [Rescue911] Baron

Hi Susan;

We took in a little girl yesterday and I truly believe that
she has the same type of neoplasm that Baron had-only it is
located under her front left leg. I can not locate the picture
you posted and I don't know your website addy. Could you
please post a link to it. I would love to compare it. Thank
you.

You all remember Baron, the rescue with the distended anus. I
received this letter from Dr Williams this morning with
permission to share it. Thank you again Dr Williams for all
your help and I hope you may learn something from Baron that
might someday help another ferret.
Susan

Dear Susan:
I have had the opportunity to review Baron's case. The cause
of the anal distention was indeed a neoplasm. The subcutaneous
tissues underneath the anus were largely replaced by a
squamous cell carcinoma, a malignancy of the skin.
Interestingly in this case, the neoplasm does not appear to be
arising from the perianal skin, which would be expected, but
from the squamous epithelium lining the anal sac. Due to the
unusual nature of this case, I am running some
immunohistochemical stains to establish the squamous
epithelium as the source of the tumor.
This is a unique case that is probably worthy of getting into
the veterinary literature. Do you by any chance have a higher
resolution image of the one that I saw on your web site?
With kindest regards,
Bruce H. Williams, DVM, DACVP
