Subject: Sudden death in ferrets

Dear Susan:

I am sorry for your loss - I well know that heartbreaking feeling.

There are a number of possibilities for sudden death in a 2-year-old ferret,
even one that is apparently healthy. In such cases, listing the most likely
causes serves little to no purpose - the only way to be definitive, and to
possibly prevent a similar situation in the future, is to have a necropsy
done by your veterinarian, with tissues sent off to a pathologist who is
familiar with ferret diseases. In many cases, provided a full atopsy is
performed, a diagnosis can be readily reached.

While I wish that I could give you an answer at this time, determining the
cause of death requires investigation, rather than just supposition.

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, dVM

Dr.Williams,My ferret just died all of a sudden, and we dont know why?She
seemed to be healthy. The night before she died I played with her,fed her,and

watered her. Then the next day i found her,she was all curled up with her
tongue sticking out. why would a 2 yr.old ferret pass away that appeared to
be healthy, and full of life? Its heart breaking! Please e-mail me, I need
your opinion. Thank you, Susan
