I suspect that the ECE caused so much damage to the intestines that it
lead to the ferrets problems and eventually death. The ECE, I am
assuming, was no longer active, or infective at this point, just the
damage it left behind was the problem. The ferret could have had the ECE
years before her eventual death.
Anyway, I am not a vet, so it would be interesting to see the report.
