Subject: Re: duck soup

After having to tube feed (esophagostomy feeding tubes) many ferrets,
I am for the most part sticking to a simple duck soup recipe -
Science Diet A/D, water and Gerber chicken baby food - put through a
strainer. Its simple, relatively easy to make and involves no
thought, which when ya have a lot of sick kids, means a great deal :)

I'm not sure why more vets done have a feeding tube inserted when
faced with a ferret that is not only anorexic, but fighting every
feeding, not to mention when meds are given. For me, its a safe,
pretty cheap method of making sure that I can administer the meds
that the ferret needs and feed them. I have had tubes inserted on
poor surgical candidate ferrets with no problems and have saved many
ferrets (6) lives here at the shelter.

My vet just had a write up for the procedure in ExoticDVM magazine in
January 2001. I understand that its a kind of tricky surgery until
you do it a couple of times, but I am so grateful that my vet is
skilled at this procedure....
