Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] swollen vulva

Renee Rider,

The vulva typical of a healthy ferret in full estrus swells to
about the size of a green grape and bulges as much as 3/8-inch
from the body wall. I've never viewed an atypical vulva
swollen as a consequence of adrenal problems, but I'd venture
to guess that the vulva would appear as you show it in your
photo and could possibly enlarge to the size of a fully estral
ferret or maybe somewhere inbetween.

I don't know for sure if an adrenal-problem ferret will go as
far as second stage estrus wherein there will be a constant
dripping of clear colorless and odorless fluid just a little
more viscous than water, but that may happen, I don't know for
sure. I'd be interested to know if that happens - may take 2
to 4 weeks.

Oh, just a thought - your ferret is already spayed, right?

Suggest that you give it some time to see just how large the
swelling becomes.

By the way, how do you get an attachment photo like yours
attached to an E-Mail?

Niro, one of my new fosters has one that is a little large.
I went around looking at all of the girls, and none are this
big.

Much to her chagrin, I took a picture.

Can anyone tell me if this is in the normal range, or if it
is swollen?

Thanks!
