Ashton has been to the vet twice with this abcess, it is like a
cellulitis and after 2 weeks of the Baytril and Clavamox, it went down
significantly, so 2 more weeks was added to the origional order. But I
will take him again for a recheck this weekend with Tinkerbelle, (the
fert with the dislocated elbow, hopefully it is time to take the cast
off). Anyway, was interested in any long term effects like the
blindness in cats and dogs from baytril.

Hi EZ - I don't think you need to worry about an additional 2 week course of
Clavamox and Baytril. It is not unusual for an extended course of
antibiotics to be prescribed in relatively severe infections, and especially
when the infection is clearing but not yet completely resolved. Ferrets seem
to tolerate both of these antibiotics very well. You said the abcess is like
a cellulitis. Does he have both?
An abcess is filled with infection - pus. A cellulitis is an
infection/inflammation of the skin and underlying tissue. The "itis"
referring to inflammation. (You doubtless know all this) Cellulitis can be a
nasty infection and is usually caused either by the staph or strep bacteria,
or sometimes e-coli. Hope he continues to improve and hope Tinkerbelle does
well after the cast is removed - know she will be happy about that! Best
regards, Meg
