Subject: question on heavy breathing

Hello,
I have a question on my 4 month old ferret. I know that when ferrets get excited they kinda make a hissing noise. I'm sure hissing isn't the best description, but it sorta sounds like that. Well, for the past two days he has been doing that more often. It has gotten really hot out and I was wondering if they pant to cool off, like a dog. He isn't wheezing and doesn't seem to be struggling to breath. He makes that sound when he is excited, but it caught be off guard when he started to do it frequently. Can this be because of the heat? I was giving him ice cubes to lick on and even put a fan on him. Nothing seemed to work. He was perfectly fine while he was sleeping, although he now thinks his litterbox is comfy place to rest. So much for the hammock and the soft sleep sack. If anybody could please shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
Dianna
