When I was faced with this my vet had me try Benadryl, but it didn't
seem to help. I thought something topical might be better, so I tried
using a coat-conditioning spray (Marshall Farms, but there are other
brands). I applied it two or three times a day and it gave her *great*
relief right away -- she stopped scratching almost entirely, and the
scratches healed up within a couple of weeks. This might help you get
by until you figure out what's causing the itchiness. (In Pogey's case
the itchiness went away after her adrenal surgery.) Note: I didn't
bath Pogey during this time, but I didn't notice any gunky buildup in
her fur because of the spray, so I don't think you have to worry about
overdoing it. I just gave her a couple of squirts and then massaged it
in with my fingers to make sure it got down to the skin and gave good
coverage.
