Subject: Heartworm

Seems the heartworm questions are coming up
again. I live in Florida and give my ferrets
heartworm preventive medication once a month
year-round. Just because the animals stay inside
is no reason not to give heartworm medication.
Just yesterday, I killed a mosquito in my kitchen
(after he bit me, of course). If you have
mosquitos where you live, you should give
heartworm preventive medication!!! It's not worth
the risk. It only takes one or two heartworms to
kill a ferret.

I use a liquid that was formulated by Dr. Kemmerer
and my vet got the formula from her. I believe
Mike Janke said recently that he has the formula
on his website also. I find liquids easier to
give than crushed pills. And, this is very
inexpensive. I think it was about $10 and lasts
for months and months (I have 5 ferrets).
