Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Update on Pia

Hello Anne-Marte,
The swollen vulva means Pia still has part of an
ovary inside her from "the bad spay", or she has
adrenal gland disease. Fat will not produce estrogen.
The low hematocrit also goes along with too much estrogen.
Which hormone do you plan on using when she gets an
injection and what antibiotic(s) are you using for her E. coli
infection?
If it is an ovarian remnant then I would not
wait until fall/winter to do surgery to remove it. Even if it
is adrenal gland disease, I would not suggest waiting for
fall/winter because her hematocrit may continue to go down,
and this will make surgery risky. Needless to say, I would
suggest surgery soon to find out what is causing her swollen vulva
and to solve the problem.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
