Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Is there a treatment for liver
disease?

Liver's can be pretty forgiving and regenerate, but it
depends what is causing the problem and how far a long. Human
liver's are the same.

disease?

I've read that a ferret's liver has the ability to
"regenerate".
What medications could do that?

One of my ADV positive boys, that I believe has Aleutian
Disease, is
having very similar symptoms as my Cara Mia did. We put her
to sleep
during exploratory surgery as liver failure was indicated.
Sadly,
she has in such poor shape by then that I could not put her
through
force feedings, etc. She was not eating and vomited the
last meal
she ate.

My boy became very lethargic. I took him to the vet at
10:00 p.m. on
Tuesday evening as he also had hind leg weakness. He has
vomited a
few times in the last few months. His fasting glucose was
83 and
fluid was found in his chest. He's been on Lasix and Amoxi
since
then. His energy is better but he acts like his gravy
tastes "bad".
He ate fairly well (after walking away a few times) this
a.m., but
then vomited it up. He's also sleeping separate from his
cage
mates...just like Cara Mia did.

Is there anything I can do to prevent him from becoming as
ill as
Cara Mia? Can liver problems be treated? His GGT was 12 on
a recent
blood test.

Thank you in advance.
