There is another condition which causes hair loss called "rat tail".
Characteristics are hair loss on the tail only with many blackheads. In
my experience the best treatment is Johnson & Johnson Clean & Clear
liquid facial soap with Triclosan as the active ingredient. Wash the
tail daily with warm water and Clean & Clear. Scrub with a soft
toothbrush and scratch out any remaining blackheads with a fingernail or
toothpick. Continue for about two weeks until the blackheads are gone
then reduce to twice a week and finnally once a week. The hair may grow
back in a month or it may not grow back until the next shed. I am NOT a
vet, but this worked for me and several folks on APF.
