Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Ferret Dragging Bum?

"I just noticed lately that my ferret, Tycho has been dragging his bum
after every time he goes poop. He's 11 months old, and I don't
remember him doing it before, so I picked him up and looked at his
rectum. I've heard a bit about "prolapsed rectums" and how they
look. Tycho's rectum is sticking out about a quarter of an inch, and
is a little bit red. What should a normal rectum look like, and what
kind of things can I do to help him if it is prolapsed?"

Most of my ferrets drag their bum to "wipe" it after they use the liter
box. Although, not everyone,evertime-and some just started doing it and
others have stopped.
Although I rarely pass up an oportunity to take pics, this time I may
pass.
However, if you don't find any pics already on the net, I will take some
of a "normal" anus ( the rectum is on the inside- so when it can be seen
it is prolapsed)- (e-mail me privately). Sometimes if you pick a ferret
up right after they go you will see some of the anal sphincter pushed
outward and a little bit of a "prolapsed look" - look at it again in a
few minutes and it should all look normal.
A real prolapsed rectum looks pretty gross (in a layman's terms)- very
red mucosa protruding through the anus-Although I have not seen a
ferret's, I had a kid come to the ER with probably about the worse I
have seen- out about 6 inches). After seeing the child's discomfort, and
relief once it was prompty corrected, I started feeling bad for out
little ferrets with the same problem.
