It's good that you followed his weight change and checked.
Unexpected and unseasonal weight loss can be a great clue that a vet
check is needed. When we have elderly ones who do that we also check
the heart since it was the only symptom one of our's with
hypertrophic (rather than dilated) cardiomyopathy had in the early
stages. Many things can cause weight loss, even an active and happy
life style, so weight loss may mean nothing or it may help catch a
serious problem early enough to have better results than would
otherwise be expected.
