Subject: rabies vaccinations for people
Moderators -- This is largely off-topic, as ferrets tend not to get rabies
as easily as many other animals do, but please consider posting it as a
safety suggestion.
In the late 1980's, my job took us to a third-world country with a high
incidence of rabies. Since I knew we'd help an injured animal if we found
one, I went ahead and got our whole family rabies vaccinations. In fact we
did often take care of injured, stray and feral cats. Our two-year old kid
got worms, almost certainly from one of those cats, but nothing worse ever
happened.
Now, back in the States, our barn cat frequently brings us prey--bats and
mice--and since there's a problem with rabies in bats, we keep the
vaccinations current.
I'd recommend rabies vaccinations for anyone who frequently deals with
strays and other animals of unknown background. (Especially since I don't
see many ferret shelter folks refusing to help another type of animal, if
they saw an injured one!)
