Personally, we have encountered reactions with each of them, but
reaction rates really are not high overall (though it would nice to
reduce them) and the risk of Canine Distemper is bad around here, and
CDV is a horrific virus in the symptoms produced before death. We
don't vaccinate those who are dealing with lympho or something else
that contra-indicates it, and we don't vaccinate those with a strong
individual reaction history. Otherwise, we vaccinate.
Our hopes are for the new Recombitek vaccine that Merial has worked
on for ferrets and zoo animals, but which hasn't bee released, yet.
There was one ferret who reacted to that in the large trial of over a
hundred ferrets, but if that level of reaction holds or improves it's
an improvement from what we have seen.
