Subject: Re: Fractured leg bone

I have a ferret named Oliver who has been through many problems lately one
of them being a bladder infection and plugging up and unable to urinate. I
do not know the history of your ferret but Oliver's' problem seems to be
related to his adrenal problem. He had one removed 2 years ago and the other
acting up for the last several months. His prostate is enlarged which is
causing the urination problem and his prostate and bladder are sluffing
putting a lot of cells etc. into his urinate. Has Teddy Bear had an ultra
sound or any other exam to see what is really causing the problem. I can
also tell you that we originally had Oliver on Clavamox, then Baytril and
switched to Cepha Drops. Don't know if this is true but was told that Cepha
Drops is given to human females who have bladder infections. Hope all goes
well your kid! Deidre

I think it's very important to know the answer here. Nupro is used by
many breeders, and many shelters. If there is a change for better or worse
we need to know. If there is a quality problem in your particular item you
need to know. Perhaps we all need to know in fact, so as to be reminded to
be observant of what we offer our ferrets each day.
I hope someone has some answers here. I love the product and use it
often. I can't explain it.... but it was told to me by a private breeder
and
shelter that since they used it they have had less uri's. Well we began
using it this winter. As god as my witness.... we've yet to have a cold.
And my ferrets always got them. Also it seemed to increase their appetites,
and most of mine needed that. :)

I have a male ferret, Teddy Bear, who has a history of bladder infection
running 2 yrs. He is 5 yrs of age. He has floaters in urine, some blood.
No crystals. We just did a round of Clavamox and he started straining
again
just as I finishing his doses. He has gone back to my vet and is being
flushed again. We are going to try Baytril. My vet feels that this may be
our last ditch effort. I'm looking at having to have him put to sleep if
there are no other options. tle knows Teddy Bear as he is one of her
Fredonia rescues.
Please let me know if we may be overlooking anything.

hi all :)

when i lived out in the woods, in an old 1908 house, air conditioning was
not
an option.

on the hotest days, i kept Zelda in the cage, on ground floor in coolest
part
of the house when i was gone at work with a small fan blowing into the
cage.

When we went camping or driving for long distances, i kept a freezer baggie
with a few ice cubes, wrapped in a small towel in her bed. she loved this.

I am not too sure of the blue ice stuff, as it can be poisonous if it leaks
or gets chewed on or scratched through. do not get the baggie blue ice
stuff. make sure it is the plastic stuff and check throughly every day for
leakage. yes they can leak. i have had several over the years that did.

Well, you could get a small window air conditioner for them. What I do
is freeze 2 liter bottles of water. I slip one into a tube sock and put
it in their cage with them so they can cool off. Clyde will lie right
next to it and Bonnie likes to rest her chin on it.

Hello,

I wrote in FHL# 208 about Nozy's toe possibly being broken. I am still
needing a little help in this situation. Just a breif overview: She got
under the couch and when I tilted it forward she screamed. I noticed her toe
was swollen and bruised on the bottom. The first day she couldn't bend it.
Now, it is still swollen but, she can bend it and does not show any signs of
pain. Do I need to take her to the vet or is there anything they can do
about a broken toe?

My other question was about Streaker, she is a blaze, 4 months old. She has
recently gained weight and I can see things that look like bruises on her
belly. I am guessing they could be veins. She is acting fine and has had no
trauma. Just need some posible answers to what this could be.

Thank you.

Maryi, Streaker & Nozy

Hi Margie
this is what i do.. I take a frozen blue ice container it's a solid hard
plastic contianer and then i wrap it in a pillow case and tie it shut well..
so they can't get to the contianer then I lay it in their cage where i can
see it at all times and i place them on it one time so they know it's there
and feels cool to them they go from there..

I think that the canola/rapeseed confusion is happening for a few reasons:

1. The term "rape-seed oil" is a widely applied one in the U.S. and,
UNlike the term "canola oil" which has rules for what can be called
that name, can incorporate several Brassica family members which are
not necessarily well suited or used for culinary use. Canola oil
fits very strict culinary guidelines and is actually an ancient oil,
though modern varieties have even less erucic acid and glucosinolate
levels.

2. Brassicas do include the mustards as well a range of other plants
like cabbages.

3. There was a bad piece of medical research 40 years ago that led
to a ban on canola oil when panic set in. It had asserted that it
was a cause of fatty infiltration of the heart. Not only was the ban
over-turned by the FDA (1985) after extensive research and confirming
research, but canola oil is now considered one of the more healthy
oils.

4. The cultivars of culinary rape seed used for canola oil are by
law extremely low in erucic acid and glucosinolate, unlike some
rape-seed derived lubrication oils from different species. (Again,
note how widely applied "rape seed" can be as a term, whereas
"canola" can not.)

The _Oxford Companion to Food_ is written for a wide audience such as
chefs and dieticians. It was one of my sources, but mostly I used
the outstanding new academic book set, _The Cambridge World History
of Food_. which is written also for food historians and nutritional
anthropologists.

Some exerts giving further info than what I already imparted from them
(pages
1,843 and 383) of the second text:

"Rape ... annual herb ... cultivated mostly for its seeds which yield
an edible oil ... leaves of young plants serve as a vegetable ...
originated in Asia ... cultivation at least 3,000 years ago ...
introduced into China and Japan by the time of Christ ... by the 13th
century cultivated in Europe ..."

"Canola has been called 'an ideal mixture for health and nutrition'
(Ackerman, 1990) ... resulting in a net positive change in HDL:LDL
ratio."

Steve and I have encountered a vulva which stays swollen in two
situations: in one there was an otherwise quiet adrenal neoplasia,
in the other the infection had been recalcitrant enough that some
permanent size change (swelling) remained though there was a decrease
from the previous level.

Infections are things on the other vet should be able to help. Have
you tried warm soaks with Xenodyne? Scooter had to have a lot of
those in conjunction with two antibiotics (one for aerobic bacteria
and one for anaerobic ones) in relation to a complication from tissue
retraction after one of his amputations. (He's the one who arrived
with the mutilated hand and has had surgeries for that.)

Hi Estelle,
It is actually better to spay her before she goes
into estrus (heat) or oestrus as you say over there.
If she is already in heat than the sooner the better.
The longer one waits the higher the risk of anemia and
bleeding complications during the surgery.
Hope that helps,

Okay guys. I figured I would nip this before any rumors got started.
I just got off the phone with Janis Gianforte of the Nutri-pet company which
makes Nupro, and I have permission to qoute her.
Each batch of Nupro is made from freshly shipped natural ingredients. Each
ingredient is checked, doubled checked and physically tasted before mixing.
If you read the label you know they use no artifical perservatives,
flavorings or colors. These ingredients *would* have made each batch totally
identical. Because of THAT fact, there may be slight variations to color or
flavor during different seasons of the year.
Janis used the example that if you read the label on a bottle of the
Snapples all natural drinks, it says on there that there may be variations
due to seasons as well.
She assures me that no batches have ever gone out which did not meet their
personal requirements.
For those who don't know.... Nutri-pet is a small private business, not a
huge factory.... they are very caring and serious people about their
products and will stand behind them 100%.
She also said that if anyone is still worried or would like to ask them
about it themselves, you are more than welcome to contact them and they will
be happy to address any concerns.

Hi everybody, my ferret Abby just had surgery for a suspected
blockage,(vomiting and not eating). They did x-rays which showed the
stomach was 3x as big as it should be. The vet next did a Barium Study
to see where she was blocked. Nothing was getting by the stomach! So the
vet did surgery, opened up the stomach and there was nothing in it,
closed that up and looked at the small intestine, about 2in. down it
there was a swollen lymgh node wrapped around the intestine constricting
it. The vet closed her up and gave Abby anti-nausea medicine to help
keep some food down. She said the lymgh node could be bacterial or
anything causing it, she's trying some medicine to shrink it. The vet
doesn't know if Abby will make it or not but if I do bring her home I
know they will tell me to feed her A/D canned food. I didn't know
if that was better for her or should I feed chicken baby food instead? I
assume she shouldn't have dry food because of the small space it has to
go through. If she gets better when can I feed her dry food again? I do
grind up Totally Ferret food,A/D,Nupro,chicken baby food, a little
Ferretvite, and water together for snacks once in a while. Would that be
good for her or to rough on her, if okay when should I start giving it
to her? I apologize for the long post but I want to be prepared and not
harm her with what she eats. Thanks to anybody that can answer me in
advance!!! Jenny and little Abby

My experience is that, at least for the last 2 years,
they only run the adrenal panels once a month. I
think the reason why is that it must be done in
batches and that they only get enough tests in to do
them once a month. Unless it's a male ferret with a
prostate problem, I don't know that a month would make
all that much difference. I suspect your veterinarian
didn't know how frequently they ran the tests, or when
they did so. Same thing happened to me. Frustrating,
but it's the most precise exam, and it can be a
valuable tool in borderline cases.

Best Wishes
Melissa

If it was one of my ferrets, we would have already been at the vets. If
it's just a broken toe, there is probably nothing they can do, but a vet
visit cost me $20 and it's worth that for piece of mind.

The most common cause of what looks like bruising on the belly is new
hair growing in. Has she begun her spring shed?

works great for me and my trio.

You are describing a serious anaphylactic vaccine reaction.
The intestines are a "shock organ" so that is why there was
mucoid diarrhea followed by bloody diarrhea. These cases go into
shock that is why the body temp dropped so low, and she had breathing
problems. You treated her correctly with IV fluids, dexamethasone,
and oxygen. One other thing to use for future reference is epinephrine.
This will help with the shock syndrome. After she is stabilized it is a good
thing to use pediapred for a few days and a broad spectrum antibiotic such
as clavamox drops, amoxi drops, or baytril.
As for future vaccinations-that is a tough decision for you and your vet
to make. I would suggest giving both benadryl and dexamethasone
prior to any future vaccines.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM

Hi Tiffany
Rascal is at home with us.He is caged most of the
time.
I let him out twice a day for about 10 min. each just
so he doesn't get too unhappy about it all in light of
his injury. He is very upset if Jingles is out running
and he is not.The 10 min. breaks seem to satisfy him.
He is using his leg at times and there doresn't seem
to be any nerve damage since he flexes his toes. His
appetite is great and we think in about six weeks time
he'll be back to himself. The only options were to
plate it @ $1000. or let him heal. The vet thinks he
will have 50% use of the leg and it is better than
amputation.
When I get this film done i'll scan some pics.
We added a young female to the family yesterday.
I had phoned the pound to report Rascal missing in
case anyone around found him. They called thinking they
had found him.I told them he had returned but I would
adopt her.Turned out she can't be more than 4 months
old,
nobody had even called looking for her.She was very
shakey yesterday but now seems to be fitting right in
and is losing the nervousness. But this is the irst
time I've heard a ferret hiss.Rascal Jingles and
Bandit never did.
Thanks for asking about "this big guy" Tiffany,I am so
relieved he is doing so well so far.
