Subject: Re: Anastrozole

I've used Anastrozole for 2 of my ferrets for 8 and 6
moths, respectively. I think it is a good alternative
for ferrets that cannot tolerate lupron; my Buttons
was irritable, listless, and generally very unhappy
while on Lupron. It has worked pretty well. Buttons
has been adrenal for almost 2 years, and still has
most of her fur. The medicine is generally cherry
flavored and my male will lap it off the syringe, but
Buttons hates medicine and always fights. The hard
thing is that it is extremely important to stick to
the dosing schedule, or the symptoms come back.

I think that it's time, though, to try another surgery
for Buttons. In the past week, her vulvar swelling
has started up again and she's losing coat, even
though I've been really good about giving her her meds
for the past month. My gut opinion on Anastrozole is
that it just slows down the progression of the
symptoms but does not stop them as effectively as
Lupron. We're going to give the cryosurgery a shot,
and hope for a good (non-fatal) outcome.

Best wishes,
and if you want more info, feel free to email me
off-list and i'll give you dosing/scheduling info and
my vet's #.
