Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Anemia

Hi.

Pia is spayed- twice (by two different vets). I think they got
it all out on the last spay.

I was a bit out of it at the vets office yesterday, so I
really didn't get much of what she was saying. What I
understood is that it may be a few things:

1. Adrenal
2. Seasonal adrenal
3. Bad spay (although neither of us believe this)
4. Some kind of blood cancer, or bone marrow cancer.

The only thing we can do for now is give her glucose, water
and food. I will also give her some iron, vits b and c. Is
that good or bad for her?

I will also make a duck soup. For now I am trying not to
stress her, and let her sleep as much as possible.

Champ is anemic from his kidney disease.
Initially, he got Lixotinic (0.5ml) once a day and
an injection of Epogen (0.06ml) three times a
week. He no longer gets the Lixotinic and only
gets an Epogen injection once a week. Next week,
after further bloodwork, Doc will decide whether
to discontinue the Epogen injections.

Has your female been spayed? Is she a breeder?
If not, IMHO, the best treatment would be a spay.

If she has been spayed, I think you should be
looking an an ovarian remnant or adrenal disease.

What is your vet recommending in all of this? I
saw from your post that she had been at the vet
but didn't understand what your vet thinks the
problem is and what is being recommended.
