Hi Steph

I know one of the reasons for most people (as some do) not
testing for ADV in Canada is the cost. If I recall correctly
here in Manitoba the cost is $ 110.00 per ferret as the test
has to be sent to the U.S. ( Manitoba vets please jump in and
correct me if this is not right). By rights that is still no
reason not to test as we do get ferrets up here from the
States and the disease can be brought in.
I also think that because most Canadian ferrets come from our
two breeders here in Manitoba and to the best of our knowledge
no one has had any indications of ADV being here, this has
made us somewhat complacent thinking that ADV only exists in
the U.S. and elsewhere. We had the same reaction with ECE when
it surfaced because it was not as widespread here. We now know
that ECE does exist here although not in the same epidemic
proportions.
As for ADV it is most likely already present in Canada, but
because most people here don't test we look at it as being
non-existent.
Just because we are not in the polls does not mean it's not
here.
I know of several shelters in Canada that already take extra
precautions because of the risk.
