Subject: Re: Skin color, black dots on tail

Hello all,
Just joined this list this weekend and already find it very
informative and helpful.
I joined as I was trying to find out what is happening with our
1 1/2 year old ferret Oscar--he's an albino. The fur at the base of
his ear (just between his ear and eye area) has gotten brownish as if
some sort of secretion, doesn't seem to bother him, no sore or
inflamation, just discoloration and dirty looking. I'm thinking
its an over secretion of "something". My vet had a look but wasn't
concerned, thought it probably has something to do with the removal
of his scent glands??????

Celia,
A picture would help a lot. If this is not possible it is hard to guess,
I am thinking your vet is talking about overproduction of the sebaceous
glands
and oily production.

I take a lot of calls in the ER for phone consults and it is very hard to
do,
without seeing the rash, or looking at the overall appearance of the
"sick"
child it is only guess work.
Some things are more typical and easy to "diagnose" on the list, but
remember it is always best to have a trained professional take a look
as well. ( not referring to Celia at all)

For the person that posted about the black dots on the tail, this sounds
like the typical rat tail and it is described on this list before, put
in "rat tail" or blackheads in the archives. I personally do nothing
for it, and it goes away
- but i know there are those who posted some good suggestions for
cleaning the tail.
