All of our pet ferrets, male and female, do this.
Take your ferret outside to a sand box or other area with dirt
and let them dig. They will tunnel down and use this backward
drag method to remove the loose dirt from the hole they're
digging. It's amazing how quickly ferrets can burrow: we had a
large pile of dirt in the back yard of our last house and it
took only a few play sessions for four ferrets to dig three
interconnecting tunnels all the way through the pile. They
were like crazed weasels running into and out from the different
tunnels as they were digging and expanding them.
