Subject: More help for Icabod - vets please
Hi All,
I have just called my vet and am awaiting a call back regarding the latest
problems with Icabod. Here's his total background:
Insulinoma with surgery - Pred suspended in Ferretone .15 cc 2x a day with
Diazoxide (chicken flavor) .25 cc 2x a day
Adrenal - Lupron Depot once a month
Cardiomyopathy - Lasix .25 cc 1x day and Enacard .7 cc 1x day
Weight: about 2 pounds
He is also eating chicken baby food mixed with ground 8 in 1 ferret food and
cooked ground chicken as often as I can get him to eat it with an always
available supply of 8 in 1 ferret food. He also munches on the cat's food,
Maxi-cat senior, whenever he is out of his cage.
He is walking much better now and has most of his hind end strength back. He
still slips a bit on the hardwood floors. He dribbles pee often and
sometimes wets the bed in his sleep.
The problem now is that he is starting to refuse to eat and when he does
eat, he chews/grinds his teeth with each lick. Also, he drinks water from
the bowl and after about ten laps he stops and shakes his head then
hacks/coughs/gags (like if you had a hair caught in your throat and were
making an "ack" sound to get it out). After a couple of these "ack"ing
episodes he would paw at his mouth like something was stuck and would just
lay down. He also is rubbing his chin on the floor.
Is this nausea? Is he choking on the water? Could this be too much backed up
fluid still from the cardio? The last time he went to the vet he stressed
really bad and his heart rate shot up and he became extremely lethargic. My
vet and I are now working through phone calls so that we can avoid stressing
him with vet visits. I also posted about his teeth (heavy tartar buildup and
red gums) and am wondering if that could be causing him pain and these
problems.
Any insight and additional help from you all would be greatly appreciated.
