Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] hair loss, adrenal

Hi All,
I have a female ferret that weighs about 1.3 pounds and had a
bilateral adrenalectomy but the right gland was not entirely
removed because of the involvement with the vena cava. I'm on
my third month lupron depot and 2 weeks of melatonin treatment
and her vulva is still enlarged with no hair regrowth at all
but she is very active playing with her 6 room mates and her
mom and dad as well as having a healthy appetite. I have a pic
of her attached but the date should be July 26, 2001. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

questions

Hi Ann,
It is hard to answer your questions about Lupron
with out knowing the dose your ferret was getting.
However it may take several months after surgery
or after Lupron to regrow the fur. If both the left and
right gland were completely removed then there should
be no adrenal gland to overproduce the hormones and
cause problems. However sometimes not all of the right
gland is removed, and the problem returns when the right
gland "regrows." If that becomes the case then Lupron can be

used or another surgery attempted.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
