Subject: Helping my ferrets
I just wanted to add to what I said about when I have had to
help my ferret pass. The injection was probably given in the
muscle as Dr.Ruth said, but I am unsure as I am usually to
upset to notice, but if I think about it when it is given to a
cat or dog in preparation for surgery it is in the muscle, so
it probably was the same for my ferrets.
I also totally agree with Mike that the Iso, although not
painful there is a bit of a struggle so would not use it as a
first choice, and if used I would definitely want the sedative
first. When my vet had used it on my rat (see my previous
posting) it was after she was totally alseep from the
sedative, but we wanted to make doubly sure that she felt
nothing as it was into the heart.
After I posted I realized that one of my ferrets last memories
was from being masked down, but that was only because we were
doing an exploratory in a last ditch effort to save him. He
had shown a very mild case of diaherea, which we were
treating, then went down hill almost over night. My vet did
emergency surgery and found cancer all through him, as he
could not even hold himself up we opted to not bring him out
of the surgery. It ended up he had Juvenile Lymphosarcoma.
Take care,
Steph
