I'm not a vet. I have owned ferrets for nearly 20 years and my opinion
is that if it is only the tail and there is excess cebum and blackheads,
them what you have is what most of us call "rattail". It's a cosmetic
situation and is not connected to adrenal disease.
The usual treatment for rattail is acne products. I found one that works
better than any other I've tried. Johnson & Johnson's Clean & Clear
Foaming Facial Wash contains the active ingredient Triclosan. Wet and
scrub the tail with Clean & Clear and a handbrush or soft toothbrush
daily for a couple of weeks until the blackheads are gone, then a couple
times a week until the excess cebum stops forming. The hair may grow
back soon or may wait until the next shed cycle.
