Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: Melatonin

Hi Chris,
I am in the fourth month of going from 1 mg per kg of ferret
to 1 mg per ferret at 2 PM daily and I have seen the following
results;
Sylvia who is a female silver mitt of 4 or 5 years old has
taken a 100mg Lupron depot and is on her third 200 mg Lupron
depot and four months of Melatonin treatment is growing hair
and her vulva has shrunk. We tried to remove both adrenal
glands before resorting to any chemical treatment but one was
to fully involved with the vena cava. Her energy appears high
and she is very alert and is a real player. Mickey is a female
sable or 5 to 6 years old and it all started with a small loss
of hair which we all thought was adrenal but when she was
opened up a enlarged spleen with a carcinoma was encountered
so the entire spleen was removed. She is now pawing her mouth
and appears to go into a insulinoma shock about twice a month
so far we are giving her .2 mg pred once a day and Melatonin
treatment. I have seen no hair growth nor have I seen her
vulva swolen her mate died and she generally plays by herself
but she also seemed to have gained some energy as she used to
eat a little of the "party mix" and go to sleep when left out
of her cage and now she walks around and plays a little. Deter
is a male sable who was bald from his neck to his toes when we
got him. When we saw no hair growth after surgery we have been
treating him with Melatonin and either he is getting his
winter hair in or the Melatonin is doing something because he
has just stared to grow hair.
Thanks for your help and concern and I am trying to keep notes
on a Melatonin treatment and since my vet said its not worth a
crap I get very little help from him.
Steve

Dosage suggestions seem to vary pretty wildly depending on
who you
are reading... I'd be more interested in hearing if anyone
has
actually seen results or if your experience is the norm. If
you go to
the FHL website and search on melatonin there is quite a bit
of
information in the archives. Dosage suggestions have ranged
from
1mg/kg to 3mg/kg. Dr Murray did say that the studies that
were done
were using a time release injectable... low dose over a long
time
might be key here.

Good Luck
Christopher
