Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Distemper Vaccine - Merial

I think the question was, did the the ferrets get vaccinated
multiple times or only once WITH the Merial vac? If they only
vaccinated once with the Merial then there is still the
question of what happens on the 2nd or 3rd time? Like the
Fervac, some don't react until the 2nd or 3rd time. It would,
however, show that those who reacted to the Fervac or
Galaxy(sp?) and didn't to the Merial might not have further
reactions, but you still wouldn't know until they had been
vaccinated a few times with the Merial.

I'm not bashing the Merial, quite the contrary as I hope to
have the best vaccines out there without reactions, but it
just jumps in my mind as a Hmmmmm.

Just my $.02,

To answer your question, most ferrets had been vaccinated
multiple
times, and several had previously reacted mildly to severely
- one of
Barb's other ferrets and one of mine had also reacted
previously
(Fervac), and did not react to the Merial.. But as Barb can
tell you,
even if one in 100,000 reacts, and it is yours ... On the
other hand,
distemper in ferrets is 100% fatal ... so I opt for the
shots and pre-
medicate (and pray), and many of my ferret buddies opt to
not vaccinate.
By the way, Merial seemed genuinely concerned and kind when
Mufasa
reacted - very nice when a company responds that way. We all
signed
waivers, so it wasn't motivated by a desire to avoid
liability. Made
some points with me ...
