Subject: Dr. Murray: Post re: Phosphorus levels and Kidney failure:
Questions open to all

Well, they say "third time's a charm"..I've been
disconnected twice now while trying to write this
post..hope this one makes it!

Hi Dr. Murray,
Thank you for your response to my post on kidney
failure.

value that helps is the phosphorus level. In kidney
failure the phosphorus level is usually elevated. "

I haven't yet had my small animal medicine rotaion in
Urinary so my information is coming from my second
year coursework and textbooks. We are taught that the
classic/typical electrolyte changes are increased
phosphorus, increased potassium, and decreased total
CO2 (metabolic acidosis) (though other combinations
are possible). The one thing we weren't taught is
*when* we see these changes (before azotemia, with
azotemia, after azotemia, or before/after/with changes
in SG..etc.-ie: does it coincide with a certain %
failure of the kidneys?).
Are there any other changes ferrets in kidney
failure show with increased phosphorus; e.g. does it
coincide with changes in the ability of the kidney to
concentrate urine, or any other parameters? If it can
stand alone, what other clinical signs does one "want"
to see to put kidney failure as a top differential, as
opposed to other reasons for hyperphosphatemia? . Is
there any prognostic value in hyperphosphatemia in
ferrets? Is this (hyperphosphatemia without
concurrent BUN and Creatinine increases) unique to
ferrets or something that happens in other species as
well?
?enough questions? <g>
..I'm just starting to realize that I'm half way
through my clinics year and nearing graduation and I
still have sooooooo very much to learn. AND, when it
comes to ferrets, I can't imagine graduating without a
list like this. If I haven't said it lately, I am so
truly indebted to all of you who make this list
possible and to the combined experiences and knowledge
of everyone on the list. I know this list will
continue to be a great source of education for me for
years to come :).

Thanks to all,
