Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Kidney Failure: Experience of
*&* non-vets

Michaela,
There is a lot of helpful information in the archives on
kidney failure. My Cokie has had kidney failure for probably
2 years now. The only thing we do is give her sub q fluids
and "duck soup" made from Hill's k/d and water to supplement
her regular dry kibble. Her BUN is somewhat elevated now,
but not enormously...
I've also wondered about ACE inhibitors, and gotten lectured
about how they are BAD for kidney failure, not good. Then
again, I've seen articles about "reno-protective" qualities.
Particularly for a drug called "benazapril"? I don't really
understand enough about this stuff to even say I'm confused,
but if you find any clues I'd love to hear about them!

vets *&* non-vets

Hi,
I was just curious about those of you who have had
experiences with ferrets in kidney failure: from
treatments used to how long ferrets have lived once
the kidney failure was diangosed. I'm also curious if
anyone has used ACE inhibitors with kidney failure and
if it's been successful. It's supposed to be one form
of treatment but at the same time, it can be a
dangerous drug to use with kidney failure. I'm a
little confused by this. I think I understand why but
I'm curious how ferrets have responded in this
situation.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks,
