Subject: Segregation of ADV (+ )vs( - ) fererts

Hi Kathrine,

As for my (+) and (-) personal ferrets, I have made no
real effort to segregate them other than to cage them
separately. They had been together for 18 months when
I discovered I had positives, and had no further
contagion; I have not been too concerned about strict
isolation of them. (Taz and Hershey were from a '+'
breeder.)

As for the shelter, I am fortunate enough to have a
private 20'x40'shelter that was built to house my
shelter kids in. It has storage, laundry facilities,
kitchen facilities, has private entrances, and is on
the same property, yet separated from our home. I
disinfect with Roccal D.

Therefore I seem to have been able to care for both
(+) and (-) kids separately, successfully.

At the point in time that I have more ADV+ kids than I
care to keep in the house, I can dedicate the shelter
to positives, and stop accepting negatives, or cease
sheltering. Alternatively, I also have families that
are willing to foster negatives until they are
adopted, if needed.

I don't know what the future will bring, but I do test
upon surrender, and upon adoption. (many have been
tested up to 4 times, already!) No positive will be
adopted unless it is to an already ADV+ home. I
believe in exercising reasonable care; you just have
to do the best you can.

I have been very fortunate in that it appears I have
not had any contagion, with the exception of my one
personal male that gets a weak + Elisa/- CEP test
result, repeatedly. I consider him a + for safety's
sake.

If you have any other questions, I would be more than
happy to answer them off-list, if preferred.
Julie
