Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: Fleas

I just wanted to add a note here about the over-the-counter
(otc) advantage look alikes. When I was at the vet a couple of
weeks ago, a lady was in to pick up her cat who had had a
severe reaction to the otc flea treatment. She had both a
small dog and the cat and the dog did just fine, so thinking
that since the cat was bigger than the dog the cat would be
fine, she used it on the cat. In a few hours she had a cat in
constant seizure that had to be hospitalized for 2 days with
IV fluids and antibiotics.

While it may be more economical to purchase otc products,
please always be wary that it is not the same at vet approved
and sold products and you may not have the same outcome as
expected (i.e. the product not even working or adverse and
dangerous side effects). Also, vets are usually knowledgeable
with the products they sell, the possible side effects and how
to treat them. When we buy otc products our vets are at a loss
as to what ingredients and side effects to expect, not to
mention the dosages given and/or suggested by packaging
instructions. If you are going to buy otc, remember to hold on
to packaging and ingredient lists as you may need them in the
future.

Dooks to all,
Stephanie

Fleas can be a serious problem in ferrets. I never heard of
the flea
stuff you mentioned, so I couldn't say whether or not it's
OK or
effective.

Advantage is probably the best solution, but you'll have to
get this
at your vet. DO NOT buy any of those Advantage look-alikes
at the
supermarket.

The only other thing that would be OK to use is a flea
shampoo that's
safe for kittens. This doesn't have the lasting effect that

Advantage has. If you do buy Advantage, get the one for BIG
dogs.
All the different sizes are the same strength of the active
ingredient and you get a lot more for your money.
