Subject: dr. diagnosed fleas, but am having doubts
Hello,
I took my three ferrets to Northern Idaho to visit my
folks. They live on a lake in the woods and the
ferrets have never been there before.
They were made to stay in the garage (as the dog
inside the house has fits if he sees them) and so I
had to take them for walks outside to give them
excercise. They seemed to like this. Frolicked in the
lake and in the tall grass.
Upon coming home, I noticed my silver had a funny red
tinge to his coat. Upon closer examin I saw tiny red
dots ALL OVER his skin. They seem to be part of his
skin not in the way a scab would be but like it
changed colors. My other two were not exhibiting this
at first. Then the next day I noticed each had similar
problems on one side of their jaw.
I've worked for a vet in the past. I know what flea
dirt looks like. This does not look like flea dirt.
What's worse, I've seen ZERO fleas on them or in my
home. They did not have a flea problem before.
They scratch like the dickens though.
The vet said they got fleas and the red skin dots are
flea dirt.
I remember that when I called in and explained the
nurse said they could have gotten some sort of mite (I
do not remember the name). I mentioned this to the vet
but he was sure it was fleas.
Surely if the fleas were so bad as to leave my silver
covered in "flea dirt" I'd be seeing some????
Does anyone have any idea about mites that give
ferrets red skin?
Thanks in advance.
Shelly w/Klondike, Nieko and Yuki
