Hi

Can somebody please tell me the amount of melatonin recommended to help the
symptoms of adrenal disease?? Bandit's right adrenal is back (cells I guess
we're not caught during cryo) anyway the vet says it's as big as a pencil
eraser. I'm not going to have him operated on because he's to fragile. I
was thinking of putting him on lupron and melatonin. Is it best to treat him
in the very early stages of the tumor and will it help prevent the growth of
the tumor?? (can any vets comment here)

I also know of a vet who is pretty popular and is having success with using
200 micrograms for a three month depot that he claims last (4-6) months. The
cost is either $50 or $60 for the three month depot. I am in the process of
trying to contact him and see how many ferrets he's treated with this dosage
and the results.

Thank you,
Christina

christina, after someone posted to the FHL recently about a
pharmacy in new hampshire compounding a lupron dose for $60, i
checked it out. it is in fact the 200 microgram dose; the
cost is $70. i didn't speak to the vet, i only spoke to the
pharmacist, then the pharmacy owner. the pharmacy owner had
other inquiries and checked in with the vet to make sure he
had all the relevant information. we verified the dose and
this fellow told me that the vet cites a 60% success rate with
the 200 microgram dose. i consider 60% to be rather low;
check out dr. weiss' recommendation and comment on his lupron
dosage: 2000 microgram dose is 100% effective, sez dr. weiss.
and keep in mind the 2000 microgram dose is available for
$200. that's 10 times the amount for just over 3 times the
cost. of course for me the real issue is how effective the
dose is at what level. i personally wouldn't consider
chancing it on 60% and will go for the 100%. i'm sure that
there will eventually be a ferret not respond to the 2000
microgram dose...but certainly mighty close to 100% is far
better than 60%. btw: dr. weiss calls his depot at the 2000
microgram level a 4-6 month depot as opposed to the 3 month
depot of 200 micrograms.
