This is just a wild guess, but while he was outside, could he have
snorted up something that has imbeded into a nasal passage? Some
tiny little seeds have barbs so they attach to wandering critters and
get transported to new locations. If one of these got into his
nostril, it might remain for quite a while.
As I said, this is just a wild guess but thought I'd throw it out
there.
