Subject: Transdermal Metronidazole

Hi,

This is in response to a question asked earlier in the week. I
consulted a
compounding pharmacist/friend and this is the info that she shared
with me:

"We have received requests to compound metronidazole in a
transdermal gel
and have done so. This has typically been for use in cats, as a
last
resort, when oral dosing couldn't be accomplished. To my knowledge,
there
is no good scientific data on absorption, although we know of
anecdotal
reports of success for metronidazole and other antibiotics. We most
often
get requests for methimazole transdermal ( where we know that the
dose is =
to oral dose) and amitriptyline and buspirone (cats with behavioral
problems are usually impossible to dose orally).

There is published information about the vehicle (PLO -pluronic
lecithin
organogel). As this is becoming more popular and compounding
pharmacists
are being asked to make transdermals more often, it is quite
possible that
there will be published data on specific therapeutic agents in the
future.

My advice is to use this as a last resort, when oral dosing is not a
viable
option, and to monitor the animal for signs of therapeutic
effectiveness. "

I hope this helps,
