A vet who was the best surgical vet we've ever had used to pat and
massage them to return as much blood to the body beforehand as a
standard procedure when one needed to come out. He told me that
years ago when I had told him how we'd help a little one (who was not
a surgical candidate) deal with her enlarged spleen and the
difficulty it was causing with passing stool. We would give her
abdominal massage and it did help; he then told me that
patting/massaging a spleen in standard procedure for removal and that
he felt the massage we were doing was having a similar effect.
