Subject: Prepuce/penis tumor?

Hey all,

New face here in the Sessoms household. "Pumpkin" was recently
surrendered to an area ferret shelter after having been given up by a
small breeder. He an intact albino (I think - pink eyes, but very orange
coat right now) hob, around 5-6 years old, and *really* needs a bath.
His prepuce looks odd and caught my eye. It's kind of blue-ish in a spot
or two, and the area looks lumpy.

Pics are in the Files area, in the medical images, under a folder called
"Pumpkin." Direct access at:

OK, avert your eyes if you're easily embarrased. I don't spend much time
looking at ferret penises, so I'm kind of ignorant about how they should
properly look. My vet managed to get his penis to pop out, and it looks
VERY purple and swollen. He acts like it hurts to have it popped in and
out of his prepuce. That's not how it's supposed to look, right? Maybe
it should be pink instead? It's much thicker near the tip and is purple
all the way down to the base. I want to get a picture of it, if I can
manage it.

I've read a few times about apocrine adenocarcinomas being highly invasive
when on the prepuce, usually having a really crappy prognosis. Someone on
this list has had a ferret seem to beat it, though, after 3 surgeries and
very aggressive cutting. Does this sound like what it could be? Pumpkin
is scheduled for surgery on Monday, in case this does sound likely, so we
can get what we can removed as soon as possible.

Advice/anecdotes appreciated!!

Best wishes,

-Pam S.
