Subject: Re: giving subcutaneous fluids

When I learned to give sub-q fluids, I learned with a syringe and
needle. That's easiest for me since I learned that way. It's like
putting NutriCal on a ferret's tummy to cut their nails. I was
cutting nails before I heard that idea and I found that a very awkward
position to cut their nails. Why? Because I learned to cut nails
another way. So, we just do it the way that is most comfortable for
us. Mine get NutriCal as a treat after their nails are cut <g>.

The first time I started giving sub-q fluids, I was scared to death.
I made sure my timing coincided with when the vet tech would be at the
office (after hours) feeding and giving meds. She told me which door
to come to and someone would let me in and help me if I was unable to
do it myself. Just knowing that gave me the courage to do it by
myself. Knowing that Champ had to have the fluids to live helped too.

I don't like to move the needle around when giving large quantities of
fluids. So, I would inject 15-20ml at the time and stop (with the
needle still inserted) and gently massage the fluids in, then repeat
until all the fluids were injected.

Sorry I'm so talkative. I've been on the road all day and I think I'm
hyper <g>.
