Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Arimidex vs. Lupron or others?

I have had ferrets on arimidex before, and had fairly
good success with it. We used liquid, though, not
tablets, but the dosing schedule was the same. The
ferret with more advanced adrenal disorder was able to
retain her hair (not a full coat, but no bare patches)
and it kept the vulvar swelling down so long as she
got it on schedule. The other one did quite well on
it also, but would have behavior problems if he missed
doses. I think that the time it takes to see
improvement is dependent on how progressed the adrenal
symptoms are.

Compared to Luron, it requires you to be more vigilant
-- even one missed day can result in a recurrence of
adrenal behavior or vulvar swelling. It can also be
difficult when the ferrets dislike medication. One of
mine got a big blob of inflamed gum tissue from
banging her head around so much during medication
time, and it had to be surgically removed.

But, it is less expensive ($35 for 2 month supply for
one ferret from compounding pharmacy, and some ferrets
(like my difficult-to-medicate one) don't tolerate
lupron well.

You may just have to try and see how each works for
you.
Best Wishes
Melissa
