Subject: Notes on Compounding Flagyl

Some info on making flagyl palatable, sent to me by Paula M., a
ferret-living pharmacist.

(It may not make sense to you, but it will to your pharmacist):

"...Flagyl (world's nastiest drug part II) - the formulation I use
involves the 250mg tablets, and you can make whatever conc you want,
usually for me it's 100mg/ml or 50mg/ml depending on what dose I am
giving. For weasels, the smaller the amount the better, it seems to
me. Anyway, we use something called OraPlus to suspend the drug
(crush in mortar and mix with 5-10cc oraplus) then use a 50/50 split
of orasweet and syrpalta to dilute to desired conc. This seems to
work well as long as you give the med at the front of the tongue
(sweet) and not the back (bitter), if you shoot it into their mouth,
they gag....I even made a paste out of it once with oraplus and mixed
it into NutriCal, they actually liked that one, but it's hard on the
average person since there's a lot of compounding to do and the dose
could easily get messed up. ..."

Also a quick note on oral prednisone: "I highly recommend OraPred
over prelone or pediapred. It makes a world of difference (the only
difference between the agents is the flavoring, it's still the same
15mg/5ml conc of prednisolone, but it tastes soooo much better and
the weasels don't yak it back at you). Keep it in the fridge and
it's even better..."

Thanks, Paula!
