Subject: potential kidney problem

Dear Peggy:

Sorry, I am one of few vets who doesn't charge for email
consults. My problem is finding time to answer all of the
email I get.

The blood profile is somewhat conflicting, but does not at
this point indicate renal failure. His general attitude does
not suggest renal failure, and the normal BUN is not
consistent. The creatinine level is at best mildly elevated,
which may be normal for him, but I am also looking a mild
anemia here (which could go along with renal failure.)

There are two values that are of importance in diagnosis renal
disease which are not available here - serum phosphorus and a
urine specific gravity (or for that matter, a urinalysis.)

At this point, I don't think that SQ's are necessary, as his
BUN is normal, and fluids are more important (and more
effective) in decreasing high BUN than making any significant
change in the creatinine.

My suggestion would be to go back in 7-10 days (perhaps even
14 if he continues to be bright, alert, and active) and pull a
new set of blood values (including phosphorus) and get a
urinarlysis for comparison.

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, DVM

Dear Dr. Williams,
I would be more than happy to pay a fee for an email
consultation. I hope you will be able to shed some light on
this situation. I had my 5 month old ferret neutered
yesterday and when they did the blood work prior they found
some things not quite right with his Kidneys. He will be
having sub-Q's ever other day till his blood work in a week.
I have enclosed the profile. x-rays and ultrasound found
nothing irregular and he is 3 lb. 14oz. and plays like a
candidate for WWF. He is a dynamo of energy. All seem to
be contradictory with him having a kidney problem I would
believe. He is now on .40 Amoxy 2 X following the
neutering.

The only med that he has received prior to now was the
human version of Clavamox (Augmentin 250.os from Eckerd) .50
2 x for 10 days do to clostridium in the ferret room couple
of weeks ago.
